Shannon Koszyk Jewelry
Shannon’s background is fashion with an obvious penchant for old Europe, anything with a history, a story and character. The religious icons, vintage coins, heavy Sterling chain, fresh water pearls, semi-precious hand cut stones and handmade African beads lend themselves to a timeless yet contemporary explanation of where we’ve been, where we are and what we are trying to say…and so that is what most of her pieces are based around.

Henry cuir Depeche Satchel : Who Wouldn’t Want To Carry Around A Carpet?
I have an idea. Tonight when I get home, I will pour myself some pinot, grab a handful of Cheez-It’s, turn on ABC family, then rip up the awesome tan carpet in my bedroom and sew it together to make a purse. When it is completed, I will sell it online for a thousand dollars. Sound good? Perfect. Mama needs a new pair of shoes. But seriously, this bag is confusing. They call the material used “fuzzy” but what the hell is it actually? I want to know what I’m dropping $1,195 dollars on. In taking a closer look, it seriously looks like a carpet. Now, call me crazy, but I think that is a steep price tag for flooring. I understand it has a leather shoulder strap and African bead detail, but still, unless this bag doubles as a floor mat, I can’t justify the price. On the positive side however, this little baby does open up a whole new door in the bag world. Bags made out of household items! The George Forman grill/clutch.

When Art Imitates Life: Sandra Bullock Adopts a Black Baby
Nope, she couldn’t stop there, she had to go for one of those elusive NAACP Image Awards to sit next to her Oscar on her mantle, didn’t she. Lemme guess, they’ll be casting her as Harriet Tubman next, right? SIDENOTE: Did they really have to put the X-Clan African beads on the kid in the pic above? Oh, and also filed for divorce from her cheating ass husband Jesse James? And we hear this shit all in one day? Just great, when your husband cheats on you, do the natural thing, adopt a baby or get pregnant. Yep, just like that she’s managed to become that no-man-having single successful black woman that everybody is chattering about. Uuh-huh, and you black women complain about how hard it is being a single parent? Well, none of that fazes Ms. Bullock, by God. Just like Black women, “she don’t need a man telling her what to do.” Now of course, her being white makes it hard for anyone to portray her as the jilted angry black woman in the media. Sorry black women, it sucks, but that’s just the way it is;

Another blogand so soon!
Wednesday 7 October 2009 I was reading a tourist brochure today and came across a passage explaining the significance and meaning behind the African beads worn by women. Apparently, the earliest Zulu beads were made out of materials such as seeds, seashells and ivory and were coloured with dyes made from fruit, roots and mud. Whilst they are considered objects of adornment, perhaps the most important aspect is the message it carries. This is achieved through the various colours displayed in a piece of jewelry, all of which have different meanings; white is associated with purity, pink with poverty, blue with loneliness and green with pining. In the past, Zulu maidens would send long involved messages to their loved ones by weaving thoughts of love, grief or jealousy, poverty or uncertainty into their creation.’

NOW Showcase: A Sustainable Curation of Design and Designers
We have a loyal following of buyers as well as designers, its become a place people come to because they know they will see old and new friends, says Creem designer, Raina Blyer. Knowing that there’s enough love and goodwill to power most of New York City at NOW, we turn to the designers to ask them one question: What was your favorite part of designing spring 11? Here’s what they had to say. modaspia Sewing the collection up was fun but nothing compared to styling the pieces for the look book. A sexy, ethereal sort of 20s vibe came through when we shot it. I stayed up the night before stringing Necklaces from African beads that we draped on the model. It was a great look and different from anything we’d done previously. C Designer Ursula Dean Kelly Lane One of my favorite parts of the design process is the development of a new print for the collection and how the print then influences the creation of new styles, while also breathing new life into past styles.

Black & Spiro Today
This morning I pottered around my garden at home and collected a few flowering things for the shop. I arranged some pink bougainvillea and some native gum leaves in a couple of shell encrusted baskets I picked up in Bali a while ago. There’s something so Summery and vibrant about bougainvillea and I do love it mixed in with a few classic blue and white ginger jars. Above is one of a pair of amazing hand beaded African chairs we have in the shop at the moment. I think these chairs are a favourite of mine right now. To think of the work that goes into them… We just received this gorgeous geometric patterned rug in today. The girls and I couldn’t wait to put it in place under our bright orange coffee table in our front lounge room display. I think it has added so much colour to the shop…I just love it and I am very tempted to take it home! Just thought you might like to see a few of the new things we have in at the moment.
